Abstract
Digital platforms have transformed the way businesses operate, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Digital platforms have also made it easier for SMEs to reduce costs, streamline operations, and automate processes. These platforms offer a range of services, from e-commerce marketplaces to online payment gateways, making it easier for SMEs to sell their products and services online. Furthermore, digital platforms allow SMEs to collect and analyze data on their customers, which can help them make informed decisions about their marketing and sales strategies. This information can also help SMEs tailor their products and services to meet the needs of their customers. This thesis investigates how SMEs can overcome challenges and benefit from the implementation of digital platforms. A case study approach is taken with interviews from one company, a Brazilian bridal shop. Based on existing literature as well as the case study, the study finds evidence on the main challenges faced by SMEs, in particular in Brazil, which include difficulty to find qualified professionals, difficulty to find high-quality suppliers, high tax load, competitiveness as well as difficulties with digital marketing. Evidence shows that different aspects of digital platforms could help mitigate those challenges and create growth opportunities. However, there are challenges that SMEs face when it comes to utilizing digital platforms. These challenges include a lack of technical knowledge and expertise, limited access to funding, and concerns around data privacy and security. Despite the challenges, the benefits of digital platforms for SMEs are clear. By leveraging these platforms, SMEs can compete with larger businesses and expand their reach and access new markets, making them more resilient and adaptable in an increasingly digital world.
