This paper examines the subject of sustainability on a European level through Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffes discourse theory. First, the paper examine The EU-Commissions reflection paper: Towards a sustainable Europe by 2030 and determine the way that the concept of sustainability is given meaning through the communication. Secondly, the national energy and climate plan of Poland is examined by the way Poland observes the discourse set by the EU-Commission, and how Poland seeks to fixate the concept of sustainability. Thirdly, the same examination is done with the national energy and climate plan of Denmark, which is compared to the analytical points from the first two parts of the paper, as well as looking at how Denmark seeks to fixate the concept of sustainability. Finally, the paper ends with a discussion of these analytical points and how the observings is an expression of strategic communication.
