Student thesis: Master thesis

Abstract

This master thesis investigates the complex dynamics of sponsorships within the rapidly growing esports industry, addressing the tangible advantages and the multifaceted challenges faced by companies seeking to enter the esports industry. As esports continue to captivate the global stage, they present lucrative opportunities for brands to boost visibility, engage with a diverse, technologysavvy audience, and achieve significant marketing impacts. However, these opportunities come with unique challenges, including rapidly shifting game popularity and the nuanced demands of a highly specific consumer demographic. This study analyzes the sponsorship landscape through a methodical collection of empirical data, from in-depth interviews and market reports to an observation study conducted at Copenhagen Gaming Week. The thesis identifies key strategic considerations for successful engagement in esports sponsorships, highlighting the critical role of authentic integration into the esports community. Huettermann et al. (2023) assert that companies excelling in esports sponsorship extend beyond simple financial contributions, actively cultivating authentic relationships and showcasing a dedication to the community's values and development. This thesis explores this assertion through empirical research and examines the potential significance of other factors and contextual elements. The findings from this thesis offer valuable insights into maximizing the benefits and mitigating the risks associated with esports sponsorships, serving as a strategic guide for companies navigating this competitive yet rewarding industry. Moreover, the literature review and this thesis’ findings outline the significant economic impacts and brand enhancements that well-executed sponsorships can yield, emphasizing the importance of strategic alignment with community values. The thesis enriches the academic understanding of esports sponsorships. It provides actionable strategic considerations for industry practitioners, paving the way for more informed and effective sponsorship strategies in the digital age.
