Student thesis: Master thesis

Abstract

Digital transformation is a continuous process that many firms have undergone in the past decades. It is believed that the winners of this race will be the companies that are the first to successfully integrate advanced technologies into their strategy and decision-making process. Process mining is one of these promising technologies that aim at helping companies win the race for digital superiority and competitive advantage. This thesis answers the research question of “What are the strategic benefits of implementing process mining tools within firms in process-intensive industries, and which success criteria are necessary for firms to maximize the benefit of process mining?” To do this, a theoretical framework is developed to explain how process mining adds value and how firms can draw a competitive advantage. The framework identifies key determinants on three levels that are mutually dependent and provide a strong narrative for the mindful implementation of the process mining technology within processintensive firms. In conclusion the research shows that the developed framework is valid and that process mining provides value and competitive advantage through efficiency gains, increased transparency and decreased error rates. These effects are further reflected on the respective firms’ bottom lines.
