Student thesis: Diploma thesis

Abstract

This report explores the strategic opportunity for SIXT Share, the car-sharing division of SIXT SE, to expand into the U.S. market. As consumer demand shifts toward sustainable, app- based mobility, and electric vehicle (EV) adoption accelerates, car-sharing services are increasingly seen as a future oriented alternative to vehicle ownership. SIXT Share, with its digitally integrated platform and growing EV fleet, is well positioned to enter this emerging space. A comparative market analysis across California, New York, and Texas, using theories such as the PIE model, PESTEL, Porter’s Five Forces, and Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions, reveals California as the most strategically aligned entry point. The state’s progressive environmental policies, advanced EV infrastructure, tech-savvy urban population, and regulatory support for shared mobility mirror SIXT Share’s sustainability focused value proposition. Internally, the company benefits from a suite of capabilities that provide competitive advantage: an AI powered pricing and fleet management system, strong brand equity, and operational synergies with SIXT’s broader mobility ecosystem. These resources, evaluated using the VRIO framework, are both valuable and difficult to imitate, supporting a scalable U.S. entry. The recommended market entry strategy is focused differentiation, targeting environmentally conscious, urban consumers in cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles. A greenfield investment model is proposed to ensure full control over fleet operations, customer experience, and regulatory compliance. Given the complexity of the Californian market, ranging from high costs and legal strictness to climate related risks such as wildfires, the report includes a detailed risk management model based on Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) principles. A phased rollout strategy is advised to align with macroeconomic recovery forecasts and mitigate early exposure. With its core capabilities aligned to California’s policy, consumer, and infrastructure landscape, SIXT Share is well positioned to establish a resilient and future ready presence in one of the world’s most advanced and innovation driven mobility markets.
