Abstract
Shadow education has the potential to undermine the quality of official education in Denmark, while promoting social constructs which challenges students’ mental wellbeing. Meanwhile the research on shadow education in Danish higher education is limited. The findings of this master thesis show how shadow education is normalized among students at higher education by applying Foucault’s terminology on power and discourse. The survey method consists of interview, document analysis and observations and concludes that shadow education is normalized on higher education as a result of 1) expected student behavior amongst students, the university and a shadow education supplier 2) a focus on exams and grades among students and a shadow education supplier and 3) the structure of specific course exams, which allows suppliers of shadow education to organize exam preparation for students.
