Abstract
This master’s thesis examines the challenges and opportunities for labor market integration of immigrants in Denmark. By focusing on immigrants’ lived experiences with integration in the Danish labor market, the aim is to identify factors that influence their perception of successful integration. The thesis employs a phenomenological approach and qualitative methods. Semistructured interviews with four immigrants who have experienced successful integration in the Danish labor market has been conducted. The purpose of these interviews is to understand immigrants’ experiences and identify the factors they find meaningful for integration. The analysis is divided into two main parts: the first part explores immigrants’ experiences of integrating into the Danish labor market, including organizational support, workplace culture, and social support systems. The second part focuses on the immigrants’ subjective perceptions of social and cultural elements of labor market integration, including positive and negative social interactions, language skills, cultural knowledge, and the perception of self-agency. It is concluded that labor market integration cannot be separated from societal integration. Although immigrants face challenges such as administrative requirements, societal dynamics, and discrimination, significant opportunities are also identified to alleviate these challenges and ensure successful integration. Positive social interactions, proactive organizational support, and strong social networks can serve as catalysts for successful integration and mitigate the impact of the identified challenges by creating a sense of belonging in the Danish society.
