Abstract

Healthcare facilities display high complexity therefore any innovation implementation and diffusion becomes a challenge. In the context of human-induced climate change, environmental sustainability innovation diffusion within healthcare facilities is an inevitable action. However, research about environmental sustainability innovations and their diffusion within healthcare facilities is particularly lacking. Therefore this research aims to explore variables that determine the rate of adoption of environmental sustainability innovations in healthcare facilities. To address the research question, a qualitative case study in partnership with Capital Region and Rigshospitalet was conducted. The empirical findings are based on 6 semi-structured interviews with Capital Region and Rigshospitalet and 4 additional semi-structured interviews with other organizations (such as Cleveland Clinic) to enhance the generalizability of the environmental sustainability phenomena within healthcare facilities. The results suggest that environmental sustainability innovations are lacking in their relative advantage even though are compatible with the values of the healthcare organizations, however, the degree of diffusion of environmental sustainability innovations is greatly impacted by the existing system norms within healthcare sector.
