A Study of the E-methanol Industry Potential in Poland

Abstract

The purpose of this project is to analyse the possibilities of establishing an e-methanol company and/or industry in Poland on the macroeconomic level on a 5 year timeline and in comparison with other northern/central European countries. Scholarly articles, databases and expert interviews are used for analysing the market using the PIE model and Porter’s five Forces.
E-methanol production is in its infancy and the next five years could prove crucial for the establishment of an energy system partially based on it, but the current political climate in Poland and its synergies with the surrounding world presents a moment of moderately positive opportunity for establishing such an economy. Political reforms and public funding would be needed to facilitate this establishment. Heavy transport and the chemical industry would be the main buyers of e-methanol, which makes it worth attempting to establish production sites and distribution considering energy security and reduction of greenhouse emissions.
The major thresholds for establishing said economy are feedstock availability, availability of renewable sources of energy, energy infrastructure in need of improvement, a traditional use of fossil fuels mined domestically and the fact that other Northern European countries have better infrastructure, more available biogenic CO2 and are more willing to allocate funds for transitioning to alternative fuels and energy forms.
