This thesis is based on an examination of the health concept. Specifically, this work is done on the basis of the following problem statement:
How does the government deal with health between the years 1939-2010 and how does it reflect on today's health communication of Arriva with what constitutive consequences for the employees?
For the preparation of the thesis, the genealogical approach of Michel Foucault is used as an analytical strategy. This is reinforced with relevant theoretical concepts of Foucault in order to be able to investigate both parts of the problem statement.
The analysis is consistently inspired by Foucault's analytical concepts in order to answer the problem statement as best as possible. The first section of the analysis demonstrates by using the genealogical view, how the translation of health changes character throughout history. The relevant historical downturns between the years 1939-2010 show how the design of the concept changes as the knowledge acquired by the government increases. In addition, the analysis shows how the government, while attempting to control citizens through a health discourse, also tries to account the citizens for their health.
The second analysis section is based on an analysis of the health communication of Arriva. Here the focus is on how the company's health measures bring constitutive consequences for the employee. The analysis shows how the concept of health will be part of the employee's private life and how the private sphere between employer and employee is invisible. This means that new business opportunities are created for both management and employee.
The assignment also contains a discussion section that is in continuation of the analysis. Here it is discussed how management's view of the employee as "the entire employee" can give the employee new opportunities if the employee is aware that he is being observed through this view.
