Abstract

Existing literature on the work and life of Sri Lankan apparel workers is reviewed in this chapter. It explores the embodied experience of working women, gendered dynamics in the apparel industry, the agency of workers, and global labour governance mechanisms. The chapter concludes by highlighting emerging themes that will further our understanding of the Sri Lankan apparel industry. Key themes include the dynamics of employment in the post-conflict regions, the experience of Tamil migrant workers in Export Processing Zones (EPZs) in the South, the effects of climate change on labour, informal work, and the implications of the Covid-19 pandemic and the economic crisis on work and workers.
