Abstract
Purpose
Supply chains (SCs) have repeatedly been exposed to disruptions of various magnitudes that have brought new developments with them. In this context, supply chain management (SCM) has undergone and continues to undergo transformations. The context and triggers of these transformations however are apparently changing, and it thus appears increasingly fuzzy what transformation actually means in the context of SCM. Therefore, this study examines SC transformations over time and observes in particular the relation between SCM and transitions triggered in the context of digitalization.
Design/methodology/approach
We conducted a systematic literature review as well as a bibliometric analysis in order to cluster the main research areas on the field.
Findings
Our findings show different kinds and motivations for transformations as well as the increasing influence of digital technologies in relation with distinct disruptions and trends. As such, especially blockchain technology occurs in close connection with sustainability- related issues; or artificial intelligence and big data seem to be of high importance when dealing with the effects of the covid-19 pandemic. Further, a temporal classification of the research shows, which disruptions with which effects has occurred at which point in time.
Research limitations/implications
This research is largely backward looking. Further studies and research efforts could map avenues and drivers for future necessary SC transformations.
