Abstract
The maritime shipping sector in Brazil is growing as an infrastructure required to support the country’s continuously expanding offshore oil industry and increasing trade volume involving goods transported by sea and inland waterways. Professional seafarers form the human infrastructure, which is a scarce resource that must cope with the current and forecasted labor demand of the maritime shipping sector. Despite being one of the most lucrative occupational category, seafaring is relatively unpopular to the general Brazilian labor market. To address the perceived current and future imbalance in the Brazilian seafaring labor market, it is relevant to research the interaction between various factors that can provide insights regarding the nature of this distinct labor sector.
This paper explores the economic indicators that can possibly influence the trend in the Brazilian seafaring labor market covering the demand and supply sides, as well as the evolution of the wage level. This is an exercise of analyzing a sector-specific labor market in order to explore potential areas where adjustments might be necessary to address an imbalance. The econometric methodology of this research using multivariate regression analysis is an attempt to gain insights and understand the trend in the Brazilian seafaring labor market. Moreover, this research sheds light to essential institutional interventions and nature of the free play of the market that are relevant to the behavior of the trend in the seafaring labor sector in Brazil.
