Abstract
‘Industrial Transformation’ (IT) is one of four priority research themes of the International Human Dimensions Programme (IHDP) on Global Environmental Change. A scientific planning committee has identified three IT research areas: (a) macro-systems and incentive structure, (b) production systems, and (c) consumption systems. This report is meant to analyse the problem of unsustainable consumption patterns, to provide a natural-and-social science perspective on ‘sustainable’ transformations, and to sketch an international research agenda for the near future.
