Abstract

Modularity has played a key role in enabling mass customization in manufacturing and traditional services. However, translating modularity concepts into healthcare services may not be trivial; customer needs are usually manifested through the care provider, who plays a decisive role in engineering meaningful modules, which may be combinations of required exam and treatment resources to fulfil patient-specific needs. We investigate how modularity can enable mass customization in healthcare operations. For that, we analyze how well-established manufacturing modularity conditions translate into that context. We close the paper proposing research directions for the study of modularization and mass customization in healthcare operations.
