The Emerging Role of Seaports as Maritime Hubs for Hydrogen

Abstract

Ports play a crucial role in the production, storage, and handling of low-carbon energy carriers, such as hydrogen and ammonia. Hydrogen, in particular, has become an essential component of many ports’ energy transition strategies. As the shipping industry moves towards decarbonisation and explores various low-carbon fuels, ports must develop the necessary bunkering infrastructure. These advancements provide significant opportunities for ports to strengthen their position within low-carbon fuel value chains. However, their role extends beyond bunkering. The broader energy transition is expected to transform ports’ energy systems, with hydrogen playing a central role in this shift. This chapter explores how ports emerge as key players in the hydrogen economy, supported by 14 short case studies. The chapter also offers policy recommendations and highlights open issues requiring further research.
