Temporalizing the Digital Venture Landscape: A Flow-oriented Problematization of New Venture Creation

Abstract

This paper explores the role of timing in digital entrepreneurship, specifically in the context of new venture creation (NVC). We challenge the conventional understanding of timing as catching the right moment and propose a flow-oriented perspective that emphasizes being in sync with temporal patterns and participating within a digital venture landscape. We problematize the existing assumptions of NVC, which focus on bounded digital technologies and intentional entrepreneurial perception and suggest alternative assumptions that consider the complex dynamics of digital transformation. Drawing on the concepts of flow, correspondence, and landscape, we propose avenues for future research into the temporal aspects of digital venture creation. By integrating insights from information systems research and entrepreneurship, we contribute to a better understanding of the interplay between digital technology and entrepreneurship in the timing of new venture creation.
