Abstract
The politics, culture and people of Northern Europe have had a decisive influence on the history of pan-European encounters for millennia, a fact that is insufficiently reflected in scholarly attention. This handbook draws attention to these shortcomings and is the first work to comprehensively present the state of knowledge on the history, society, politics, economy and culture of the European North—from its geological origins to recent political developments. From their areas of specialisation, 84 experts on Northern Europe from 13 countries contribute information and analysis to a varied and nuanced picture of the North. The handbook is rounded off by an extensive timeline from the beginnings to the present. This foundational work is aimed at students, researchers, the media and all those interested in Northern Europe.
