Abstract
• The report provides an overview of cultural business models with emphasis on sustainable tourism in rural communities.
• The report outlines four different configurations of cultural business models, which come with different barriers and opportunities. The organising categories are the 1) types of assets (tangible/intangible) and 2) the organisation of the offerings (centralised/diffused).
• The report also outlines potential avenues for strengthening cultural business models and promoting sustainable tourism in rural communities. Emphasis is on contracts, governance, and communication.
• Multiple case examples are provided to exemplify the multitude of cultural business models in Europe and beyond.
