Abstract

As you state (“How the pandemic is sending universities back to school”, FT Magazine, May 15) the coronavirus has turned the world of higher education upside down. Students may need to live off online teaching for most of 2020 and perhaps even beyond. But is this an inevitable transformation process towards a digital university?
We undertook a data collection project to understand how students and academics experience online education. Online teaching allows for greater flexibility and learning pace adaptation. Many students enjoy the new format, consuming knowledge at a time that suits them and equally being able to replay parts of lectures they found particular challenging. At the same time, we found that the limitations of online teaching are overwhelming.
