Abstract

This article shows that one of the key explanatory factors to the typological variability between the Germanic and the Romance languages is the role of the semantic component MANNER in linguistic event encoding. Analyses of data from mainly Danish and Spanish demonstrate that Danish manner-verbs, among other things by exploitation of their telic potential, occur in a large variety of structures as main predicates, while in Spanish the MANNER component rarely is expressed in the centre of the clause and in many cases, in fact, is omitted from the clause structure. Finally, the article discusses the possible effects of these cross-linguistic differences in MANNER specification on non-linguistic, visual conceptualisation of events.
