    Abstract

Having observed in an empirical study a cultural difference in the way Frenchmen and Danes react to the lexeme humour in French and humor in Danish, I carried out a comparative analysis of these two quasi-equivalent words. Using two text-corpora consisting of interviews with French and Danish members of the European Parliament, I found via a semantic and a syntactic analysis significant differences in the use of these words, differences which were integrated in two different mental representations. Also typological differences were addressed, showing that French humour and Danish humor are lexicalised at different levels of abstraction.
