Abstract
The proposed paper is a work in progress and is ultimately intended as a companion piece for a course that I am teaching on visual communication in the context of a business school. One of the main themes of the course is how visual communication differs from verbal communication, or, to put it more simply, how images differ from words. What, for example, can we do with images that we cannot do with words, and vice versa? A more specific aim of the proposed paper is to develop the ideas of the communications scholar Paul Messaris and to make these ideas accessible for a contemporary audience.
