Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to improve the sustainability assessment and reporting practices of higher education institutions (HEIs) by conceptually synthesizing university-specific aspects and indicators from previous literature in a holistic monitoring framework.
Design/methodology/approach: Aspects and indicators were identified by a systematic literature review of 137 studies and categorized using deductive and inductive content analysis methods.
Findings: This research proposes the GEROCO model (Governance Education Research Outreach Campus Operation) together with a set of 113 indicators summarized from 1,346 original indicators, representing five dimensions of sustainability practices that are unique to the higher education sector.
Originality: Various sustainability assessment and reporting approaches exist in research and practice. We consolidate university-specific indicators from the research perspective to provide the higher education sector a comprehensive framework to apply as a sustainability activity guideline, an internal assessment tool, and an external communication instrument.
