Abstract

A growing number of organizational scholars and practitioners invoke the concept of modularity to provide insights to a variety of problems in their respective fields. Modularity is the central structural characteristic of platforms which have become essential to the development of digital innovation. However, research on digital technologies has called to question established assumptions of modularity. Aiming to clarify the concept across domains and encourage a convergence of perspectives around the different views, we explain modularity and its opposite, integrality, across three analytical levels: market offerings, organizational structure, network relationships.
