abstract = "The mobile IT revolution has resulted in near 100% global diffusion of handheld and networked devices, and soon almost all of these will be Internet enabled. The next technological configuration on the horizon is the Internet of Things, further connecting the so-far unconnected and facilitating the further digitalisation of even more aspects of society. Research has so far failed to establish a comprehensive and broad understanding of these developments related to work and its organisation. This chapter offers an initial analysis of this based on previous work, and by drawing upon a broader perspective than that emphasising mobile edge-devices alone. The chapter considers mobile and ubiquitous information technologies within the broader contexts of computing in the small, computing in the large and computing at scale. Based on this distinction the chapter analyzes the distinct characteristics of each, and how these three forces work together in the construction of new types of work and in emerging forms of organising work.",
