Abstract
In this paper, we propose a set of axioms that can be used to model thechoices made by speakers and hearers when pairing speech signals withmeanings in speech production and understanding. We then prove thatif these axioms are a valid characterization of speakers andhearers, then speaker and hearer preferences can always be encoded bymeansof a measurable utility. Finally, we discuss the potential ramificationsfor linguistic theory.
