Abstract

This study investigates luxury experiences during transition to motherhood. Phenomenological, autobiographical interviews reveal three distinct narratives of first-time mothers with different life courses. Findings show that consumers’ life courses dramatically shape self-understandings of motherhood and lead to according shifts from material to immaterial, unnecessary to functional and rare
luxury consumption.
