Abstract
As a new unique form that combines the advantages of market and hierarchy, supply chain alliance has attracted attention from both academia and practitioners. The extant research on supply chain alliance is rooted in transaction cost economics (TCE) and resource-based theories (RBV). Both TCE and RBV focus on internal hierarchy, either to minimize transaction cost (TC) or maximize hierarchy value (HV), thus neglecting hierarchy cost (HC) and transaction value (TV). Further, most studies on supply chain alliance have not dealt with the balance between inter-firm and intra-firm activities. Accordingly, this study theorizes about supply chain alliance from transaction value lens (TVL) beyond TCE and RBV, and builds a duality model of supply chain alliance to balance both internal and external links .
