Understanding Film Metaphor: A Renewed Case for Relevance

Activity: Talk or presentationLecture and oral contribution

Description

Arguably the essence of metaphor is comparison: in order to increase our understanding of something that we do not understand, we compare it to something that we do. If metaphors are fundamental to both language and cognition, then they can be visual, multimodal, and filmic as well. In film metaphor, the filmmaker must somehow signal that the corresponding stimulus should not be interpreted literally, while the viewer must recognise this intention, identify the relevant target and source domains, and decide which properties should be mapped from one to the other.
