The purpose of this thesis is to gain a profound knowledge and understanding of the passenger boarding problem to examine the best boarding method. This thesis consists of three parts. Firstly, a general description of the problem and definitions of terms that are relevant for airplane boarding. Secondly, known boarding methods have been studied from academic researches to provide knowledge about boarding processes and the many related factors. Thirdly, an agent-based simulation model has been programmed to test different boarding methods to investigate which boarding method has the fastest boarding time. The analysis of the simulation shows that a boarding method with a highly ordered sequence gives fast boarding times whereas a method where passengers board the airplane more randomly is not as quick. Different factors, such as passengers who do not follow the boarding sequence and passengers with priority boarding can affect the boarding sequence and destroy the good boarding results. Therefore, boarding strategies with a highly ordered sequence has proven not always to be the best. Actually, more random boarding strategies can in some instances be better. It is not possible to give an unambiguous answer to which boarding strategy is the optimal. There are many factors to consider when choosing a boarding strategy. It has to be efficient, cheap and give costumers the best possible experiences.
