This Master thesis explores how selected employees in DONG Energy Wind Power outline and prioritize their work assignments during a normal workday and in what way goals, job satisfaction and habits playa role in self management. This remains the main focus of the thesis' analysis. Throughout the thesis, e-mailing is given as an example of a phenomenon that affects the three above-mentioned factors. The question is, if the employees are able to outline and prioritize work assignments so it adds value to DONG's targets, what creates job satisfaction, and if habits control the way the employees manage themselves. The frame ofthe thesis' examination arises from a phenomenological approach, and the method is inductive as the aim, based on the empiricism, is to find a pattern or even a image of the reality of how the employees outline and prioritize their work assignments and how it affects every individual. The study will be conducted using empirical data and the examination carries out several confidential qualitative and explorative interviews with 9 self-managing employees at DONG. Two separate interviews from each of the 9 employees where conducted and analyzed using relevant theory. The analysis shows that the majority of the respondents fail to follow their goals when outlining and prioritizing their work assignments, which adds no value to DONG. Based on the information provided by DONG, this finding proves contrary to what was assumed prior to conducting the interviews. Furthermore, the thesis discovered that the respondents find job satisfaction in having an exciting job, being able to contribute with specific knowledge, having a flexible work place as well as finishing the to-do list every day. Further, it was clear from the respondent's descriptions that they all agreed to the fact that too many work assignments reduced their job satisfaction and that work related e-mails are a big part of their day, both during the workday but also in the spare time. It was interesting to learn that e-mails have a strong influence on how the employees balance work and family/spare time. Our results showed a paradox perspective, as the respondents had a different perspective on e-mails. During the workday, the respondent's paralleled an e-mail and work assignment, but in the spare time, when the respondents checked their e-mail, they did not perceive it as a work assignment at all. This indicates among others that habits control the way the respondents handle e-mails, as it is something they do without reflecting on it. This habit may cause consequences for the respondents, which the thesis' discussion encapsulates. In the discussion, we discuss in what way emailing affects stress. The thesis finds that checking e-mails in the spare time or checking e-mails constantly have a strong influence on an individual. It may in the long run cause stress, as it exclude the important recovering and rest needed by all individuals in order to function and perform optimal. It is relevant to mention, that if e-mailing in the spare time works well for an employee, as we show examples of in the discussion, this prioritization is a good thing. But if it causes absents owing to illness then it is neither productive for DONG nor the employee itself.
