Within the European Union, the free movement is essential for the collaboration. However, when it comes to social benefits the welfare states are less keen on sending funds across the border. Even though the Danish welfare state is doing well, it seems odd that everyone seems to believe that the Danish welfare state can handle social integration. This thesis analyses the Danish welfare state and the impact of EU. The thesis consists of two parts. The thesis commences with an examination of whether the Danish welfare state is based on a historic and cultural heritage. The second part of the thesis analyses whether the welfare state is being challenged by the membership of the European Union. In order to address the first question, the thesis examines the origin of the Danish nation. Adrian Hastings advocates that the nation was founded prior to the French revolution. By applying Hastings’s theory of nation hood it is possible to collect historical data backdated to the Lutheran reformation of 1536. Based on the examination the thesis finds that the Danish nation existed much earlier than the actual formation of the Danish nation state. The thesis finds that the Danes were living within a cultural unity for centuries and that the national church and clergy played an important role in the formation of the Danish nation. The clergy became public servants by delivering messages from the Crown to the people and by translating the bible into Danish and let the people read it - the Danish language became widespread. The formation of the Danish nation resulted in popular movements and in a public actively involved in politics. The thesis finds that the core premise for the existence of the welfare state is trust: The Danish people share commonality of standards, which is essential in order to achieve a so-called high social capital. Thus; the first analysis of the thesis concludes that the Danish welfare system is based on a historic and cultural heritage.
