Abstract
The following thesis aims to outline practical guidelines for the implementation of Data Mesh, after finding a clear absence of established approaches and methodologies from academic scholars. The thesis navigates through real-world case studies, analyzing challenges and comparing these experiences with insights highlighted from theoretical underpinnings. By studying the existing literature we discover an absence of a standardized methodology for implementing Data Mesh, as well as a lack of studies detailing specific case companies. Our thesis contributes to the existing literature by investigating the implementation of Data Mesh in three specific organizations, namely Lego, Zalando, and Saxo Bank. We compare their implementation journeys alongside theoretical frameworks, shedding light on the obstacles they faced during the adoption of Data Mesh, and find significant challenges regarding relinquishing centralized control, scalability, data quality, skill shortages and the necessary organizational transformations. To address these problems, we develop a customized framework based on TOGAF and DAMA, providing a detailed, step-by-step approach for organizations to effectively navigate the complexities of implementing Data Mesh. The framework addresses specific aspects for suitability assessment, architectural design, iterative implementation, and change management practices, explicitly catered to Data Mesh. The thesis concludes by discussing our discoveries and pinpointing areas where further research is needed.
