Terminologiske og leksikografiske udfordringer hos e-conomic international a/s: En undersøgelse af tilgange til oprettelse af en termbase i MultiTerm

e-conomic international a/s is the developer of an online accounting application, which is offered in nine countries. So far the company has managed its text production without a term base, but at the expense of consistency in use of terms and collocations etc. in the application and across its online media. This may potentially harm e-conomic’s image, and in my capacity as a language employee at e-conomic, I therefore sought to examine ways of creating a term base in order to outline my recommended design of a tool that may solve this problem. My first step was to examine terminological and lexicographical approaches thus enabling me to formulate a theoretical foundation for my subsequent analysis of the needs of the potential users of a term base. My examination showed that the main characteristics of terminology are its focus on concepts, i.e. an onomasiological approach, and the importance of concept systems. Lexicography, on the other hand, employs a semasiological approach dealing with all meanings of a word, and lexicography’s theory of functions has user needs as its main focus. I found the lexicographical approach to be the most suitable for this project mainly due to its focus on user needs and because the terminology of e-conomic covers too wide a field to be organized in concept systems. I based my analysis primarily on the work of Sven Tarp, a renowned scholar in the subject field. After drawing up a profile of the users, I concluded that the genuine purpose of the term base should be to assist the external translators as the primary user group and the international employees of e-conomic as the secondary user group in translation and proof-reading related situations going from English to any other target language supported in e-conomic. I then analyzed the needs of these users, after which I turned to the lexicographic theory of structures in order to examine how the data needs were best implemented in the terminology management system MultiTerm, for which e-conomic has a license. In basing my needs analysis on the theory of Tarp, I had to include his distinction between monoand bilingual reference works. This resulted in a long range of potential needs depending on which tools the users consult, but due to the poly lingual concept-based structure of MultiTerm, many of these needs turned out to be redundant and were consequently eliminated. These included needs relating to equivalents in opposition to independent terms, synonyms and collocations of a given language. In the application, a one-to-one relation exists between terms etc. of the languages in economic, meaning that no distinction is made between source or target language oriented terminology. Equivalents to source language data are thus identical to the independent target language data. After presenting my recommended design of the term base articles, I concluded that with minor adjustments the term base may also assist in text production and comprehension as well as cognitive situations. The concept-based structure of MultiTerm did not compromise my lexicographical approach in this thesis as the tool contains multiple customizable features catering for individual needs. However, the analytical process was rather complicated when having to distinguish between mono- and bilingual reference works. When completing the term base in a tool like MultiTerm, this distinction becomes irrelevant. Fortunately, much new lexicographic research is taking place, and special interest is paid to the potential of electronic resources – a great advantage to Tarp’s theoretical framework.
