Abstract
Using an analytical strategy and second order observations, this thesis explores a problematization of the subjectivity of students in relation to the purpose of the university. The thesis is based upon a constructivist epistemology, where we have defined the following research question in order to guide the thesis: How does CBS construct a subject position for their students through Nordic Nine, and how does that relate to the emergence of the discursive purpose of the university, and hereof the student’s subjectivity from 1537-2013?
The thesis explores the topic of the students’ subjectivity in relation to the purpose of the university through a discourse analysis using Foucault's theories of genealogy and archaeology of knowledge. The discourse analysis is based upon empirical materials in the form of authoritative policy documents and laws from 1537-2013. Furthermore, we explore the subjectivity of CBS students constructed by CBS through their new strategy regarding Nordic Nine by using Foucault's theory of governmentality. The governmentality analysis is based upon CBS’ new strategy, a conducted interview with the Dean of Education at CBS, Gregor Halff, as well as internal and external CBS documents about Nordic Nine.
Through the discourse analysis, we have observed that the subjectivity of students has been constructed to become qualitatively more complex over time, as the purpose of the university historically has been constructed in relation to a more complex society over time as well. In our governmentality analysis, we have found that CBS has constructed a subject position for its students, which is overflooding in regard to all the things the students have to be and do in order to become transformative, responsible and flexible problem-solving members of society. This is constructed in relation to the future problems of society and humankind, which is for the whole human endeavor, future generations, and the entire planet.
