This thesis deals with work-related stress and takes its starting point in six interviews conducted in three different HR-departments in the regions of the Danish public sector. The objective is to examine the ways in which the public sector tries to prevent stress among its academic employees organized under the union DJØF (Danish Lawyers and Economists Federation). The Danish public sector has been chosen because is one of the largest employers in Denmark. Four factors that make a decisive impact on the reduction of stress are identified. The management-structure of the organization has an implicit tendency to prioritize certain functions of the organization, such as control and productivity, above others. It is necessary to promote a structure that to a higher extent focuses on stress reduction. Certain management-tools have been incorporated with the purpose to counteract stress among employees. These tools are: working environment legislation, employee development interviews, stress courses, workplace evaluation and employee satisfaction surveys. An organizational culture that does not consider work-related stress taboo but regards it as a condition that should be counteracted. To assign accountability for stress reduction and create a trustful relationship between management and employee. This must include the ability to talk openly about stress. These management-tools can be beneficial if properly used. When they are effective, it leads to an organization that uses surveys to articulate and detect stressors and the organization will be able to accommodate the natural limitations of its employees. This can lead to a better the organization of work and to an acceptance of stress as something that can be articulated at the workplace. To conclude, the way in which the public sector combats stress is by making stress an ongoing priority in daily life, and ensuring communication about employee welfare and personal limitations in relation to work.
