In this thesis, I examine the working process of Danish translators who are working with translations of medical texts. The reason for this choice of subject is that translation as occupation is changing dramatically for instance with regard to costs and the time available. When examining the working process, I wanted to investigate which choices the translators make when choosing between the translation strategies called macro and micro strategies. Moreover, I examined whether the lack of knowledge in concern with the purpose of the text is significant in connection with the working process of the translator. Finally, I wanted to clarify whether the translators use the translation strategies unconsciously. An empirical study has been carried out. It consisted of experiments with five educated translators with considerable experience in medical translation. The methods used in this study have been screen recording of their actions on a computer, think-aloud data recording in an attempt to record their thoughts in connection with their reflections and actions and finally a retrospective interview in order to clarify the process and their normal working situation. The results of my survey show that the translators have a tendency to choose the communicative translation as their macro strategy, but that the end result seems to be the semantic translation which could be due to the fact that medical texts are very informative and that translators are focused on the communication and in ‘getting the message across’. Moreover, my data seem to indicate that the translators are able to obtain good translation results even when they do not have specific knowledge of the purpose of the text, but that the translator and consequently the working process seem to be affected. Furthermore, the translators participating in my study do not seem to use the translation strategies consciously since they are aware that they are considering something and solving a problem, but do not have any recollection hereof afterwards. Finally, another important factor, which influence the work of translators, also seems to be the time pressure which affects the working process.
