Blockchain Technology In Healthcare: The Implementation of Blockchain Technology to Manage Electronic Health Records In Danish Public Healthcare

Abstract

This research paper investigates the implementation of blockchain technology to manage electronic health records (EHRs) in the Danish public healthcare sector. Blockchain holds significant potential in enhancing data security, interoperability, and patient privacy. However, several barriers hinder its widespread adoption in Denmark. Understanding and addressing these barriers are crucial for realizing the benefits of blockchain in EHR management. This study addresses an important topic as blockchain has the power to transform healthcare systems. Given the significance of EHRs in delivering effective care, exploring the barriers to blockchain implementation in Danish EHRs is vital for advancing the field. Through a comprehensive literature review, qualitative case study, and 12 semi-structured interviews, this research identifies key barriers and proposes recommendations on how to overcome these barriers from the epistemological standpoint. The diffusion of innovation theory guides the research adopting an interpretive approach. Findings reveal seven barriers: complexity leading to misconceptions, trust in current data security, lack of clinician awareness of advantages, challenges in obtaining proof of concept, limited observability of blockchain benefits, heterophily between blockchain and healthcare, and bureaucratic resistance to novelty. Correspondingly, seven recommendations are provided. This study thereby contributes to academia by expanding the knowledge of the vastly unexplored relationship between blockchain technology and Danish public healthcare in a case handling context. Addressing these challenges empowers policymakers, organizations, and healthcare professionals to leverage blockchain's potential, enhancing EHR security, privacy, and interoperability, and ultimately improving healthcare outcomes for Danish citizens.
