Lately the welfare of the planet has caught the attention of companies as well as the population and the government. More and more companies have invested in more sustainable ways of doing business in order to act with a greater responsibility towards the planet and its inhabitants. Sustainability weighs economics, people and environment equally and the main philosophy is not to take more from the earth than is given back. However, many companies are still not catching on to this trend. If the behavior of man is destroying the planet, why are so many not doing something about it? Inspired by the above questions I examine the connection between ethics and sustainability by exploring a specific case. An engineering company under the pseudo name KAPORA started up a sustainability project internally in 2008 however had to shut it down in the beginning of 2009. The main goal of the project was to strengthen the company in order to provide customers with better and more structured sustainability counseling and guidance. My focus in this paper is to examine and discuss the different ethical dilemmas and problems during and after the project was closed down while discussing the dilemmas in more general ethical terms. I examine my subject by following Hans-Georg Gadamers philosophical hermeneutics. By keeping my horizon open my aim is to create a new understanding regarding the ethical dilemma of my case by introducing the ethical philosophies of Jeremy Bentham and Immanuel Kant. Thus this paper reveals an interesting observation regarding different ethical views on the sustainability dilemma however will not contribute with a “right or wrong” answer. Not surprisingly economy has a great influence on the willingness to invest in sustainability. However the ethical journey this paper reveals inspires the conclusion of the problem in a new and radical way. Rather than being stuck in the narrowness of economic rational solutions should also be considered from an ethical point of view.
