The Danish Police is an organisation with many traditions and has been known for its strong culture and unique collegial unity. When the police reform was introduced in 2007, the organisation faced radical changes. There was a need for rationalisation and professionalization within the organisation. Based on the reform and consultant reports, it was concluded that there was a need for increased recruitment of employees with an academic background in order to raise the professionalism in the organisation. Consequently, since 2007 the Danish Police has experienced an increased influx of academics especially at the Danish National Police. However, police officers within the organisation have not been pleased with these changes, as they find that the academics lack an understanding of the nature of police work and the culture within the organisation. Conversely, the academics acknowledge the difficulty of entering an organisation with many traditions and a deep-rooted culture. Yet, they believe that they can enhance organisational procedures and processes through utilisation of academic skills. The academic working culture is known for an individual approach with focuses on analysis and reflexivity, while the police officers in contrast represent a collectivist approach. As more and more academics join the organisation, the two cultures are colliding. Hence, there are two different professions, the academics and the policies officers, each of which articulates the influx of academics as either a benefit or a barrier to the organisation. Based on Ernesto Laclau’s and Chantal Mouffe’s discourse theory, the purpose of this thesis is to analyse how the two professions construct and articulate their own specific meaning regarding the influx of academics. This analysis is based on interviews with the two professions. The two articulations on the matter are similar, but different as each group attaches specific nodal points to the matter in the attempt to construct meaning. The two different articulations are compared in a hegemonic analysis to point out how they differ from each other and what possible antagonisms or agonisms arise in the discourses. Thus, the purpose of the hegemonic analysis is to discuss how the articulations can be expressed. The thesis concludes how the two constructions of meanings lead to hegemonic projects, which on one hand expresses the influx as an academisation, and on the other hand as a professionalization. These two different projects, which exist side by side shows a lack of management behaviour regarding the communication towards the influx of academics.
