In this single case study I want to understand from a deeper internal perspective, why The Royal Danish Theatre (RDT) as a public institution, during decades continually returns into the focus of the critical public media. This time the national debate concerns the organizational raison d’être: - What’s the raison d’être of the RDT? (Politiken, Kultur, d. 12.03.10). From the perspective of the functionalistic organizational culture Professor Edgar H. Schein: “To survive every group/organization must reveal to universal and different two problems. The problems are fundamental for each organization and concerns: a) survive in and adjust to the external environment and b) integrate the internal processes to ensure the ability to constantly responding and adjusting the external environment”! (Schein, 1994, pp: 19). From the perspective of this group dynamic, the problem of RDTs returning into critical public debates is viewed as internal integration problems of the theatre that prevents the ability of the organization to adjust the external environment. The internal integration problems are investigated form an anthropological methodology, by observing and interviewing during three month at the Theatre. The theatre is immediately containing four art-groups: opera, drama, music and ballet. Compare Edgar H. Shein over time smaller groups in an organization, are developing individual culture (Schein, 1994, pp: 238) Contributed by the physical split-up in three houses spread in Copenhagen, each art group at RDT must be investigated separately. Therefore only one art group is in the scope of this study, and forms the empirical basis of the study. I have chosen the ballet group caused by their hospitality and willingness to raise the curtain for an investigation. By using Schein’s functionalistic approach, culture is seen as a measurable function possible to influence by the leaders and as: “[..] a system of meaning that guides the construction of reality in a social community”! ( Ibid.). From this theoretical view on culture followed up by observation and interaction with members of the ballet as the empirical foundation, the aim of this investigation is to answer: How can the problems about the RDT’s raison d’être noticeably in the public debate correlate to internal integration problems of the organization?
