Bullshit og ledelse: et foucaultsk blik på forankringen af bullshit i ledelsesdiskurs

Communication in- and revolving leadership often contain a superficial language beset by a lack of evidence-based argumentation. Therefore, a distinctive discourse about leadership, big in influence and widely spread, has been able to find its place as the prevailing discourse on the area of leadership. This discourse is based upon pastoral techniques that now determine the way in which leaders interact with their staff. Due to an unsolvable paradox between giving and demanding redemption, the pastoral power inhibits leaders to communicate openly and instead require them to cover this paradox using bullshit language. The discourse demands an emotionally marked communication, from both leader and staff that cannot always be delivered. This thesis will, at first display the current discourse regarding leadership, as being a discourse expecting and cultivating an emotional bond with the professional life, from both leaders and staff. Following that, my own definition and application of the term ‘bullshit’ is presented, so that it can be used analytically in both determining the discourse and the power relations within the discourse. The power relations in the discourse are considered to be ‘pastoral power’, as conceptualized by Michel Foucault. It is proven to be inherited, but also contingent, opening up for reflection and future change in the discourse, and that it thus cannot hold a status of being true. Lastly, the consequences of the presence of bullshit is discussed, and a proposal for a strategic use of it is 4 offered. The thesis concludes, that the discourse and bullshit exists in a co-dependent relationship, and furthermore that this relationship is not only necessary, but also has been a productive force playing a role in creating the organizational reality, for good and for bad, that is present today.
