Work Integration Social Enterprises are defined as a type of organization that combines a social purpose with selling products and services on a commercial market and employing the people to whose wellbeing the social purpose is meant to contribute. Even though these types of organizations seem to have been subject to an increasing awareness in recent years, assumingly because the above mentioned combination does not agree with the way we traditionally look upon organizations, they have not been subject to much research in Danish context.
In this paper I will try to make up for the lack of research by examining what one could define as a characterization of the relationship between organization and employee, when the employee is the one to whose wellbeing the social purpose is meant to contribute and the function of selling products and services on a commercial market in regards to that.
In doing this I have carried out a collective case study based on interviews with four managers of Work Integration Social Enterprises that have been operating for several years and therefore with some certainty can be looked upon as having ample experience in combining the three aspects mentioned above. I will analyze these enterprises and their way to work by using the work of the two French sociologists Luc Boltanski and Laurent Thévenot and their book ‘On Justification – Economies of Worth’ as theory and especially the concept of regimes, which they describe in their book.
The regimes function as morale standards that people in modern society act in accordance to, and as a consequence of this, the regimes must be viewed as having a coordinating effect on human coexistence. By using the work of Luc Botanski and Laurent Thévenot I will show that the social purpose, the selling of products and services on a commercial market and the employment of the people to whose wellbeing the social purpose is meant to contribute, are actions based on different regimes that the enterprises therefore must be said to combine.
Since acting in accordance to one certain regime implies that a person is perceived as being a certain type of human being, which in society is associated with a degree of worthiness, and since people acting in accordance to this, contribute to a certain type of model for human coexistence, I will show that this combination of different regimes, results in a different model of human existence and that the humanity that defines the employees in these organizations differs from how the humanity of employees in enterprises usually is perceived.
