The premise for this Master’s thesis took its stand in pondering as to what extend the Distortion Festival as a (cultural) event is being politically calculated upon by the local authorities, Københavns Kommune. Due to the festival’s great dimensions regarding the amount of participants and the hereby inevitable popularity, and also due to the immediate passive behavior by Københavns Kommune against the festival even though it’s great dimensions have generated severe problems, this thesis has taken up its initial pondering and problematized Københavns Kommunes intervention in the Distortion Festival in the light of Michel Foucault’s diagnosis on the governmentalization of the state. This has amounted to the following question to be posed; How can the Distortion Festival be seen as a domain for biopolitical intervention, and how does Københavns Kommunes intervention in the Distortion Festival shape the participants? In order to conduct the analysis of the posed question, this thesis has included Michel Foucault’s thoughts on his concepts of governmentality including the biopolitics. This is due to the thesis’ hypothesis regarding how the events’ participants are at the same time both the mean and the end of the intervention, instantiated through the simultaneous embedding of totalizing and individualizing technologies of power. For a broader perspective on the abovementioned posed problem, this thesis has included a critical historical analysis in order to do a conceptualization of the analytical constructed domain of the governmentalization of events. To conduct this specific analysis two diverse events are included in the shape of Gay Prides and right extremist marches, as to trace how these events and their participants have become the subject of the governmental rationality.
