The aim of the DanTermBank project (www.dantermbank.dk) is to establish the foundation for a national terminology and knowledge bank. In order to organize and present data suitable for diff erent user groups it is important to describe data categories (metadata) of the future term bank unambiguously, and in order to ensure interoperability with other term banks, one should choose a set of terminological data categories which are compatible with the ISO TC 37 Data Category Registry (DCR), www.isocat.org (here referred to as ISOcat).
When defining a set of metadata categories, it is very useful to base it on some kind of systematization, e.g. a taxonomy, specifying main groups and various levels of subgroups. However, ISOcat presents terminological data categories in alphabetic order, which means that one may end up with an incomplete and/or inconsistent set of data categories that is very diffi cult to use and to extend. Therefore, the DanTermBank project group decided to propose a taxonomy for terminological data categories, which will help users and designers of term banks get an overview and identify individual data categories.
In this connection we came across the problems of defi ning ‘symbol’, non-verbal form’ and ‘non-linguistic form’ – are they synonymous designations of one data category or do they designate diff erent data categories? In the presentation we will discuss defi nitions from e.g. ISOcat, ISO 704:2009 and the DanTermBank taxonomy of terminological data categories, and we will present some thoughts about the relevance of non-linguistic information in a national term bank.
