Abstract

The concept of agency in and of organizations has a long-standing tradition in the social sciences, ranging from economic perspectives such as agency theory (Eisenhardt, 1989) to practice theory (Bourdieu, 1990; Giddens, 1984) and critical theory (Habermas, 1968). It is intricately intertwined with issues of human nature (e.g., self-interest; see Jensen & Meckling, 1976), collaboration (see Cyert & March, 1963), and (socio)materiality (see Orlikowski, 2007).
