Abstract
The need for pension reform is widely discussed against the backdrop of well-known demographic changes. The old-age dependency ratio is increasing globally because of falling fertility and rising longevity. These developments challenge pension systems, which in many countries already from the outset encounter problems with pension adequacy and financial sustainability. This book offers the first coherent and in-depth description and analysis of the Danish pension system, including its structure and performance. This chapter introduces the key concerns and areas of research discussed throughout the book, as well as the chapter topics. The chapters cover a spectrum of theoretical, empirical, and policy-oriented approaches to the pension system in Denmark, with past, current, and future perspectives. Each chapter contains original and self-contained material on a specific topic specific to the Danish pension system.
