Abstract

Technological learning within national innovation systems is a core concern of innovation policy makers and innovating firms. However, the opening of economies, the globalisation of innovation networks, and the internationalisation of innovation expose innovators to a variety of knowledge and technological learning interactions within different networks and ecosystems. Navigating technology learning interactions efficiently remains an unsolved problem, especially within the context open economies in transition. We apply SEM-PLS to a survey of 230 firms investigating the role of international networks for technological learning within national innovation systems. We demonstrate support for a full mediating role of global innovation system networks for technology learning within NIS, in contradiction to prevalent understanding about learning patterns within NIS.
