Restless Plate Spinners and Rising Stars: How Organizational Foci and Status Dynamics impact Tie Creation and High Impact Science

    Abstrakt

    The paper analyzes status antecedents and their effect on tie creation and performance. We couple social exchange theory with focus theory, to improve our understanding of how individuals perceive, pursue and utilize status. We utilize two comparable contexts of varying duration to isolate the importance of durability for individuals? status seeking behavior. The paper is based on quantitative analyses of 3402 scientists affiliated with a large scale research facility 2006-2011, publishing 1282 on-site publications and 97,361 off-site publications. Through comparison of collaboration patterns, tie creation and performance we find that status in a long durability context increases status and performance, while status in a temporary context decreases network centrality and performance. This indicates that status
    antecedents and effects depend on the context of status attainment.
